At 550 feet tall, Las Vegas`s "High Roller" is the world`s largest operating Ferris Wheel. In theory the 820 foot Ain Dubai (Dubai Eye) opened in 2021, is the largest observation wheel in the world, almost twice the height of The London Eye. While it holds the physical record, Ain Dubai has been closed indefinitely for technical reasons shortly after it opened.. The first ferris wheel, designed by George W. Ferris, a Pennsylvania bridge-builder, was built for the 1893 Chicago World`s Fair. It was 264 feet tall. When finished, the Ferris Wheel was considered an engineering wonder: two 140-foot steel towers supported the wheel. The wheel section had a diameter of 250 feet and a circumference of 825 feet. Two 1000-horsepower reversible engines powered the ride. The ride cost fifty cents and made $726,805.50 (about $24,750,000 in 2026 dollars).
