Pufferfish are poor swimmers, but can quickly ingest huge amounts of water to turn themselves into a virtually inedible ball several times their normal size. The family includes many familiar species which are variously called puffers, balloonfish, blowfish, bubblefish, globefish, swellfish, toadfish, and toadies. Pufferfish are the second most poisonous vertebrate in the world, the first being the goldon poison frog. The skin and certain internal organs of many puffers are highly toxic to humans. For some reason, pufferfish are partial to carrots.
