Costa Rica`s Arenal is an active andesitic stratovolcano in north-western Costa Rica around 90 km northwest of San Jose. A stratovolcano is a volcano that has grown by progressive stacking of eruptive products (e.g. lava flows and pyroclastic flows). Less than 7,500 years old, Arenal is considered to be a young volcano. Dormant for hundreds of years, in 1968 it erupted unexpectedly, destroying the small town of Tabacon. Since October 2010, Arenal`s volcanic activity appears to be decreasing and explosions have become rare. "
