The Hummingbird moth, genus Hemaris, mimics the look, coloring, and flight of hummingbirds. It's really hard to tell them apart from true hummingbirds unless you get very close. Just like the hummingbird, the hummingbird moth`s buzzing and humming sound is created by its rapid wing movement. It has a rapid wingbeat up to 70 beats per second. and its tongue is about double the length of the moth`s body. They range in length from 2—2.5 inches and are covered in gray hair that resembles feathers. Their wingspan ranges from 2 to 6 inches depending on the species. They are found in North America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. The moths were featured in the 1991 film, The "Silence of the Lambs". According to IMDb, the moths were treated like celebrities, flown first class… and had special living quarters.
