Dolphins like these live in groups, normally of up to twelve individuals, called pods. These may be nursury pods of females and calves, juvenile pods of immature males and females, or pair-bonded males. In places with a high abundance of food, pods can merge temporarily, forming a superpod perhaps exceeding 1,000 dolphins. By grouping themselves in this way, dolphins can better protect themselves from ocean predators, especially sharks.
